Chapter 16

Meike

"Kneel, elf," Draknar commanded as he entered.

I lifted my head and looked at him. Each footstep sounded loud in my little cell, accompanied with the clang and clank of his overblown armor. Two other drow accompanied him this time, both wearing the red robes of clerics.

"My name is Meike, not elf."

I felt so weak and sleepy. That brief sentence was a chore. I still hadn't recovered from his last visit, just before midnight. Maybe a little food would help me restore the energy he kept sucking out of me.

I froze. The constant, familiar tug that linked me to Cormac, Kahlan, and Elky had changed. I glanced to the west, and then toward them. When I arrived yesterday, it pulled me straight west. I felt all three pulls to the northeast, and downward.

They're in the city!

It took all what little strength I had left to keep my face calm and composed. I couldn't alert Draknar to the threat, though all I wanted to do was run to the window and try to find them down in the street below. My life, and their lives, depended on their presence remaining a secret. So I regarded him, and didn't have to feign wariness at all. The bastard terrified me.

"I'm too weak to play your stupid little game of humiliation, drow."

He stopped before me and assumed in an arrogant pose: hands on hips, feet shoulder width apart, and chin high. Draknar proved exceedingly good at looking down his nose. I did notice his long white hair hung loose now, but otherwise he looked the same.

Does he ever take off that armor?

"Elfmaids obey," he sneered. "You aren't allowed to argue, or you will suffer my wrath. On. Your. Knees."

His eyes began glowing with hellfire. My breath caught, knowing his threats had teeth. He'd done terrible things to me the day before, when I failed to obey his commands. It didn't take long for him to teach me the errors of my ways, and I performed to perfection after that.

I slipped off the cot and knelt before him, just as he commanded me to do the previous day. My knees spread wide, wrists crossed behind my back, and I lowered my head in submission.

"What are your commands, master?"

"Look up."

I obeyed, catching his eyes. Draknar immediately snarled and backhanded me.

"Ugh!" I cried, the pain exquisite. Brightness flashed behind my eyes, blinding me for a long moment. His blow left me sprawled on the floor, body trembling. "Why? I obeyed."

"Never look me in the eyes," he said. "I am your superior. I am your master. You are elven filth, and will die for my glory and empowerment."

"Yes, master," I said, through clenched teeth. The hate was reciprocated, despite my inability to strike back. "But you will not get away with sacrificing me."

He laughed. "Do you have any idea how many have threatened me with that pathetic 'you won't get away with this' line? Kneel."
